Beyond the Book is a literacy project that supports children ages 5-8 to become successful and joyful readers.
In February 2022, DC Public Library launched Beyond the Book to connect and engage families of developing readers with the library’s collections and services. The program seeks to create joyful and independent readers who find inspiration and motivation through a love of books, reading, and literature.
Over 1,600 children are currently registered for Beyond the Book. Since the program started, 8,800 books and over 20,000 materials have been distributed to young people. Library staff also distribute arts, crafts, and writing materials; and host intensive programs for 80 children at each neighborhood location.
In its first year, Beyond the Book featured The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats; Last Stop on Market Street, by Matt De La Peña; The Lion and the Mouse, by Jerry Pinkney; and The Day You Begin, by Jacqueline Woodson.
